The family and community of Stephen Craig are continuing to mourn his tragic death following a devastating road accident in Paisley, Scotland.
The 50-year-old was walking along Hawkhead Road on the morning of September 18, 2024, alongside Craig McDermott, when both men were struck from behind by a vehicle that mounted the pavement. The driver, Scott Nugent, had reportedly fallen asleep at the wheel after completing a 13-hour shift.
Prosecutors told the High Court in Glasgow that Nugent failed to negotiate a bend while driving his Peugeot 208, leading to the collision. Stephen Craig was thrown into a nearby petrol station forecourt, while McDermott was carried on the bonnet before the vehicle eventually came to a stop after hitting a bus stop.
Both victims were rushed to hospital, but Stephen Craig, a married father from Coatbridge, Lanarkshire, sadly died four days later from his injuries. McDermott sustained serious injuries, including a brain bleed and multiple fractures, and continues to suffer lasting effects.
Nugent later pleaded guilty to causing death and serious injury by dangerous driving. During sentencing, Judge Lord Arthurson described the incident as catastrophic, noting that the victims had been simply walking to work when their lives were forever changed.
Nugent was sentenced to five years in prison and disqualified from driving for six-and-a-half years. The court heard that he had expressed deep remorse and accepted full responsibility for his actions.
In a tribute, Stephen Craig’s family remembered him as a devoted husband and father, saying his loss has been devastating for all who knew him.
