The remains of Hailey E. Athay, a 33-year-old woman who had been missing for over a year, have been discovered in Kelso, Washington, authorities confirmed.
Athay was originally reported missing on January 3, 2025, after her family said they last saw her in November 2024. The case remained open as investigators worked to locate her, with certain areas previously identified as points of interest during the search.
Earlier this week, hikers in the area came across clothing and what appeared to be human bones and alerted authorities. A photo of the remains was sent to a forensic anthropologist, who confirmed they were human. The following day, a more extensive search was conducted, leading to the discovery of nearly complete skeletal remains along with personal belongings.
A forensic investigator later confirmed the identity of the remains as Hailey Athay through dental records. Her remains have been turned over to the county coroner’s office, where efforts are ongoing to determine her exact cause of death.
Officials have stated that the investigation remains active, and further details may be released as more information becomes available.
Athay’s passing has deeply affected her family. According to her mother, Nicole Brooks, she leaves behind three daughters, who have been cared for by family and friends since her disappearance.
