A deadly mass shooting in Kyiv has left six people dead and at least 14 others injured after a gunman opened fire in a busy central district on Saturday.
According to authorities, the 58-year-old attacker, whose name has not been publicly released, began the incident by setting fire to an apartment before taking to the streets armed with an automatic weapon. He shot multiple victims outside an apartment building and near a shopping area, causing panic as bystanders fled.
The gunman later barricaded himself inside a supermarket, taking customers and staff hostage. Despite efforts by negotiators to de-escalate the situation, communication attempts failed.
Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy confirmed that the attacker killed several people on the street and at least one hostage inside the store. One additional victim later died in the hospital from severe injuries.
Special tactical units eventually stormed the location, and the suspect was shot and killed by police. Authorities reported that the attacker had a prior criminal record and was originally from Russia, though a motive has not yet been established.
Ukraine’s security service has classified the attack as an act of terrorism. The incident occurred in the Holosiivskyi district, an area where some residents said they recognized the suspect.
Officials continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the shooting, which has shocked the city amid ongoing wartime conditions.
