Giovanni Montoya Guzman has been identified as the suspect who was shot by deputies following a pursuit in Bakersfield, California.
According to the Kern County Sheriff’s Office, the incident began on Friday, April 10, after reports of a shooting on South Pepper Drive near Edison Highway. Deputies initiated a pursuit of Guzman, which continued onto Highway 58.
During the chase, Guzman’s vehicle crashed and flipped over in the eastbound lanes near Weedpatch Highway. Following the crash, patrol units and SWAT team members surrounded the vehicle. Deputies then discharged their weapons, striking Guzman.
Guzman was pronounced dead at the scene. The circumstances leading up to the use of force remain under investigation.
The incident caused a temporary closure of Highway 58 for several hours as authorities secured the area and conducted their investigation. Further details may be released as officials continue to review the case.
